Distinguished and Famous people from Singleton

🤝 Rose Scott

Rose Scott spent her first eleven years at Glendon near Singleton, educated at home with her sisters. She later became a prominent campaigner for women's suffrage and social reform in Sydney. Her work included helping establish the Womanhood Suffrage League and pressing for changes affecting women's legal and economic independence. An investigation into conditions at Darlinghurst Gaol contributed to the opening of a separate women's prison in 1908. Her Woollahra salons brought together writers and reformers, but those metropolitan gatherings followed a Hunter Valley childhood. Scott's views also reflected some conservative moral expectations of her era, making her a more complex figure than a simple modern political label suggests.

🏉 Steve Merrick

Steve Merrick was born in Singleton, attended Singleton High School and joined the Bulls after initially playing rugby league. His sudden elevation to the Wallabies in 1995 produced a particularly good local sporting story. When national coach Bob Dwyer telephoned, Merrick thought the call was a prank and hung up. He went on to play two Tests against New Zealand, then returned to driving a coal truck. Offered a professional contract requiring him to move to Sydney, he chose to return to Singleton, play with his mates and start a family. For all the prestige of international selection, hometown rugby remained a powerful attraction.

🗄️ Noel Butlin

Noel Butlin was born at Singleton in 1921, the youngest of six children in a railway worker’s family. His research reconstructed the patterns of Australian investment, production and development from detailed evidence. Records he obtained from companies formed the core of ANU’s business and labour archives, later named for him. He was an independent and determined researcher whose interests also reached environmental questions and the costs of road accidents. The archive is a particularly tangible legacy: material gathered to answer his own historical questions became a resource through which other people could ask new ones.
